The 1940 Storm

The winds tore apart the Tacoma Narrows bridge before heading for the Great Lakes. Over 40 lives were lost on Lake Michigan.

Lloyd was on the Canadian freighter Novadoc when it sailed into the worst storm to hit Lake Michigan.

He tried to steer against 126 mph winds.

These same winds ripped the deckhouses from the steamer Minch and sent the ship and its crew to the bottom. Only a few miles away the Davock was flipped and lost with 30 men.

Lloyd and 16 others were saved when a tiny fishtug came to their rescue. But it wouldn't be the last time Lloyd would nearly be lost on a ship.
